Winter Solstice depicts the spirit of a white reindeer, standing under the Aurora Borealis at night. There is a small cabin in the distance that is flying the Saami flag, nestled in a clearing with a mountain rang in the background.
The Saami people are indigenous to Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of Russia. A large part of their culture is tied to reindeer. Through the ages, the Saami people were pretty nomadic, traveling around to different grazing grounds, following their herds of reindeer. Not only were reindeer a very valuable resource, but they held spiritual symbolism as well. Reindeer symbolizes strength, resilience, adaptability, and community. You need all of these things to survive the harsh seasons of the Arctic Circle, and the Saami know this well.
As for the why the winter solstice, it is the longest night of the year and is a celebration among many people all over the world to help bring in shorter nights and longer days. The winter solstice happens every year on December 21st. It is the day where the night is the longest and the daylight is the shortest. After December 21, the nights get shorter and the daylight gets longer until the summer solstice which happens every year on June 20th.
